New to San Diego, Christine Micu joins the La Jolla Renaissance Singers from New Jersey, where she was the Director of Choral Music at Hillsborough High School. An active music educator and musician, Dr. Micu will be joining the faculty of Bob Cole Conservatory at California State University, Long Beach this fall to teach Choral Music Education classes.

Originally from Albany, NY, Dr. Micu attended The College of St. Rose on full scholarship as a music education major with concentrations in piano and voice. She sang with the St. Rose Masterworks Chorale and Chamber Choir under the direction of Robert Sheehan in performances throughout the Capital Region, England, and Ireland, as well as with the Albany Symphony. Upon completion of her bachelor’s degree Dr. Micu moved to New Jersey to further pursue music education and voice study at Westminster Choir College. As a member of the Westminster Symphonic Choir under the direction of Joseph Flummerfelt, she participated in numerous concerts and several recordings under the batons of some of the world’s finest conductors. She has been fortunate to have participated in concerts with the New York Philharmonic, the New Jersey Symphony, and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s in the world’s most renowned concert halls.

Under her direction, the Hillsborough High School Choirs have received Superior and Gold ratings at festivals from Boston to Florida, performing literature on par with most college programs. In addition to directing the choirs, Dr. Micu has also taught AP Music Theory, Vocal Workshop, Musical Theatre Workshop, and voice lessons. Under her musical direction, the HHS Musical Theatre program was consistently nominated for Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards.

It was her tenure at Hillsborough and supervising student teachers that inspired Dr. Micu to want to contribute to the field and pursue her doctorate in music education at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts. Dr. Micu’s interests include empowering people to express themselves through music, musical theatre, and enjoying the great outdoors.
